South Indian cuisine is pretty much distinct and known for its wide variety, taste, and flavours. Many of you cannot think beyond the North Indian fare and some of you think that palak paneer and chicken tikka masala are the only popular dishes of India. That is so untrue. Since most Indian restaurants abroad serve mostly North Indian dishes, many of you are misled into thinking that they are all to Indian cuisine. Today many restaurants abroad including any reputed Indian restaurant Coburg, have delicious South Indian dishes in their extensive menu. Here are some mouth-watering South Indian dishes.

Masala Dosa

Dosas are crispy pancakes made from fermented ground rice and lentil batter. You would get a variety of dosas today thanks to innovative chefs. However, masala dosa is the quintessential South Indian version of dosa and is loved by one and all. The crispy pancakes are stuffed with a spicy potato filling tempered with mustard seeds, fresh curry leaves, chopped green chillies and coriander. Sambar Vada

Vadas are savoury items that are deep-fried and resemble dense donuts. They are made from ground urad dal batter. Idli

Hyderabadi Biryani is the most popular Biryani worldwide. This biryani comprises of layers of aromatic Basmati rice with a layer of fried onions, cooked mutton, mint, coriander, ghee and spices in between the rice layers and then sealed with dough and cooked over a low flame on a biryani haandi or pot. A dash of rosewater adds aroma to the dish. Saffron soaked in milk is also added to give the authentic colour to the Hyderabadi Biryani. This is certainly a Hyderabadi speciality. Biryanis are usually served with yogurt raitas and saalans.

Chicken Chettinad

This is a hot and spicy South Indian Chicken dish that is quite popular. Chicken pieces are cooked till tender in a spicy Chettinad paste along with onions and coconut. This chicken dish has an amazing aroma and mind-blowing taste thanks to the magical mix of tomatoes, onions, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, curry leaves and a spicy and exotic coconut-y-paste.
